kawaii.demon.co.uk

The first ISP I signed up with offered hostnames in the form of xxxxxxxx.demon.co.uk, and I picked kawaii. The name, in conjunction with a static IP address gave my computer a fixed identity on the net. I don't connect through this ISP so often these days, as I am with two others offering lower call costs. Instead, my computers are now identified to me by their names on my internal network.

My main computer... costs so much money and is always needing an upgrade in some department. Currently consists of...

• Asus CUSL2 motherboard. Based on the Intel i815e chipset.

• Intel Celeron 2 566 MHz. For those of you who are interested, it is a SL46T Q012A074. So far I have only tried overclocking it to 850 MHz, requiring an increase in voltage to 1.65 V.

• Globalwin FKP32 heatsink & fan.

• 256 meg of PC100 SDRAM in two DIMMs. Works fine at 133 MHz.

• Seagate 17 GB hard disk.

• Asus V3800 Ultra Deluxe. TNT2 card with 32 MB of ram, tv out, video in and 3D glasses. Makes older games fly, but this card makes my system fail to overclock to 133 FSB. Using video input and output at the same time, it is possible to convert NTSC to PAL!!!

• Traxdata CDR2600EL CD writer kit, and also their CDR ACC002 PCI SCSI kit. The CD drive itself contained a Yamaha CDR 200t-NB and the PCI card is made by Advansys. Not sure which card it is, as there is no mention of the model number on it. Appears to support ultra SCSI though. Probably the ABP930-U. Both working fine.

• Sony Multiscan 200sf monitor. 17 inches of the stuff.

• Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live Value soundcard.

• A Modular Technologies 56k external modem. It's the one that was in all the adverts, with a logo added by the retailer. Now flash upgraded to V90, and typically get connections at 46666 bps.

• A Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical.

• A Umax Astra 1220P scanner.

• Canon BJC-4550 A3 inkjet printer. Replacement for previous printer. Cheapest A3 inkjet I could find.

• Pioneer DVD-U02 DVD-rom drive. Quite nice, but slot loader doesn't seem to like 8 cm CDs.

• A Mitsumi 1.44 floppy drive.

• A Mitsumi keyboard. The only component I still use from my first ever computer! Needs a DIN to PS/2 converter for connecting.

• D-Link DE528-CT combo network card.

• A Ryo-oh-ki mouse mat! Getting a bit dirty now...

Yup, I've upgraded so often now that I have enough bits to build a second machine ^_^

• Abit BP6 motherboard. Yup, gave in a got a dual Celeron motherboard. Plenty of overclocking options such as bus speeds and voltage control.

• Two Intel Celeron 366 MHz processors. Overclockable to about 610 MHz at 2.1 V. Running at a mere 550 MHz at 2.0 V as the system speed is limited by the RAM.

• Globalwin FKP32 heatsink & fan.

• Coolermaster DP5-5H51 heatsink & fan. Nowhere near as good as the FKP32, but it is a third of the price. Will keep me going until I get an Alpha...

• Haicom DM-56V14HSF PCI modem. Software modem based on Motorola chipset. Supplied drivers result in intermittant crashes. Latest drivers from Motorola appear to work well.

• Hyundai 64 meg of PC66 SDRAM. Known working at 103 MHz bus speed.

• Matrox Mystique G200 graphics card.

• Western Digital 6.4 GB.

• Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128 PCI soundcard.

• Hitachi 8 speed IDE cd-rom drive.

• A Mitsumi 1.44 floppy drive and keyboard.

• 3Com Etherlink III network card.

• Some 15 inch monitor

• PC Chips M550 TX motherboard. Ami bios, supports bus speeds to 75 MHz.

• Intel Pentium 166 MHz MMX processor. Overclocked to 200 MHz. It used to work at 225 MHz, but it doesn't want to do that any more for unknown reasons (probably motherboard realted).

• Some 64 meg of EDO ram.

• Western Digital 850 MB hard disk.

• Matrox Mystique 4MB graphics card. Only chose this as it was the cheapest 4MB card I could find...

• Matrox Rainbow Runner for above video card. Allows viewing of CC text.

• TechWorks Power3D card. Cheapest 3DFX card I found on retail sale in my local area. Once I got rid of the supplied drivers and used the latest reference drivers from 3dfx, it works fine.

• Creative Labs Sound Blaster 32 ISA soundcard.

• ESP 14 inch monitor. Looks like a goldfish bowl, but image is very sharp compared to many others of similar age and specification.

I'm doing more travelling these days, and taking my main computer with me is not really an option. So now I have a portable too...

• Toshiba T2100 notebook. Basic machine is a 486DX2/50, 4MB RAM and 250 MB hard disk. Mono screen. Far from the latest power units, but then again, I didn't need to sell my car to buy this.

• Some 16 MB RAM upgrade. Now totalling 20 MB, I can at least run Win95.

• AST PC card Ethernet adapter. Connects to coax, Win95 detects it as NE4100 compatible. Handy for linking up with my main computer.

• US Robotics Sportster Winmodem PCMCIA.

Old stuff

• Chaintech 6-BTM motherboard. Award bios, supports bus speeds to 133 MHz.

• Genius GE2500III PCI combo network card

• Creative 48mx CD-rom drive.

• Intel Pentium II 350 MHz processor. Was overclocked to 466 MHz but since changing to an AGP video card, I can't do that any more... ok at 392 MHz.

• Western Digital 2.5 GB hard disk. Died suddenly without warning just inside the three year warranty. But the cost per MB to get it replaced was higher than if I put the money towards a new drive, which is what I did.

• Puretek 33.6 internal modem. If you're wondering why I have two modems, it's because the I flash killed the 56k one, and got this to use while the other one is fixed... then was used for PC banking, as above modem doesn't like it. Now not doing anything much as I have ran out of slots (PCI and ISA) on my motherboard...

• Creative Labs Dxr2 MPEG2 decoder card.

• Spot ScanTak 2c Colour flatbed scanner. It's slow and noisy, with questionable reliability. But it works. Just. Sold mine to upgrade, but then a CD writer kit caught my eye...

  I had a few people asking me if it is worth buying. My answer would be, how much money do you have? I don't think it can be beaten at it's price, but with hindsight, I would have got something a bit more up market.

• Danmere Backer. Tape backup device that uses a normal VCR. Yup, I finally decided that my faith in hard disks (and Win95 too) is not as high as it used to be. Redundant since I got a CD writer.

• US Robotics Sportster Vi 28.8 fax modem, with voicemail facilities I never tried using. Works nicely at 33.6 though, until vapourised in thunder storm.

• Chaintech Triton FX based motherboard with 256k of pipeline cache. Got toasted during a thunder storm.

• Epson Stylus Color printer. Claimed max 720 dpi. Perfect for printing out anime pics although I wish the ink costs less. HP's black printer ink still seems better though. Also fried.

• Hauppauge WinTV Celebrity (ISA card). Got cheap. Works ok for still image capture, but not much good at motion capture.

• Western Digital 250 meg hard disk. Nice and fast compared to simalar sized drives. Sold after upgrade.

• Cirrus Logic 5446 2 meg EDO graphics card. Works well enough for its price. Sold after upgrade.

• Maxell LS-120 superdisk drive. External parallel version. Got to expand the storage, but is horribly slow.

• NEC 4x CDROM. One of the first IDE models out, served me well... Sold after upgrade.

• Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 value soundcard. Have got the software wavetable emulator for it... (Creative WaveSynth). However, Final Fantasy 7 comes with Yamaha's S-YXG70 software which is much better.
